Here’s to Stress-Free Holidays


The holiday season, on paper and in movies, seems like it should be a time of pure excitement, cheer, and joy. For many people, however, it’s actually a time that invokes major stress and anxiety. It’s a busy season, demanding your attention, stretching your budget, and requiring you to be surrounded by people more often than normal.

While the holidays are ripe for conditions that can cause stress and anxiety, you don’t have to miss the fun that comes along with the season. By mindfully implementing some of the advice below, you likely will find that you can make the most of holiday parties, travel, family get-togethers, and more.

1. DON’T TRY TO DO IT ALL

The media and retail industries make it look like the holidays need to be constantly active, with mountains of presents and a cheery activity every day. But that simply isn’t realistic for most people’s lives. Take the pressure off by allowing yourself to say “no” when something doesn’t bring you joy or sounds unappealing. If you’re tired from a long day at work, it’s acceptable to skip a night on the town seeing lights or the holiday party your friends are throwing.

If your goal is to avoid debt in the new year, it’s okay to tell people that you can’t do gift exchanges this year or to get them a small token of your affection. Knowing your limits with your routine, budget, and health is essential. Implementing the word “no” when your limits have been reached will protect you from being overly worn out.

2. COMMUNICATE

Traveling home during the holidays for many people is anxiety-inducing.

Familial relationships can be complex and complicated to navigate.

Before you find yourself spiraling into a full-on anxiety attack while with your family, be sure to reach out to your support system for reassurance and to calm your nerves.

Before you leave for holiday events, make sure that you have a good cell phone plan that provides access to all the data, text messaging, and calls that you need. Avoid steep overage charges and slow service by going over your plan so you know what’s covered.

3. MEDITATE

The practice of meditation helps to center the mind and body before or after a long day. It’s a beneficial practice to combat anxiety and stress because it puts your mind and body in the present moment, requiring you to focus on your breath and ignore all the exterior hustle and bustle. Daily five-minute meditation sessions here and there can help you get through the holiday season.

4. SLEEP

Prioritize your sleep. It’s easy to get caught up in the festivities and neglect getting a full night’s rest. But a lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your mind and body. Here are some ways to get a better night’s rest:

  • Stick to your bedtime schedule and consider moving it up if you find yourself worn out.

  • If you don’t have one, start a nighttime ritual that will signal your brain it’s time to wind down.

  • Avoid bright lights and electronics before bed.

  • Make sure your bed is comfortable and that your bedroom is inviting and calming.

5. EXERCISE AND EAT WELL

Throwing diet and exercise to the wind is easy during the holiday season. There are goodies everywhere you go, and with all the holiday activities, finding time to exercise can be hard. Sticking to a routine can make a huge difference in how you respond to stress and anxiety, so make sure you get in at least 30 minutes of body movement a day to combat the winter blues and stressors. 

Remember that how you treat your body will have a lasting impact on your sleep, energy, mood, and mindset.

Make sure you’re getting your daily vitamins, eating enough protein, watching portion sizes, and planning ahead for meals.

The holiday season can be a joyful season for you, too.

Allow yourself to say “no,” and stay in contact with your support system. Make sure your body is taken care of by practicing meditation, sleeping, exercising, and eating well. By implementing these tips and strategies ahead of time, you can avoid stress and anxiety.
